THE MATRIX: EXPLAINED

By Alec Galambos

Ok.  Congratulations to you, as you have stumbled on a complete (and completely logical, in my belief) explanation of the Second Matrix movie (and therefore the first).

First, I must say that there are things that I do not know for certain (I obviously haven’t seen Revolutions) and characters I still don’t get (I don’t get why Persephone is important, if she even is), so I’m offering you the basic enlightenment… just enough to cover what you have been wanting to know.

I am going to do this in sections: explaining each concept\character separately.

1)

         The Basic concept –

ZION is a program.   It is a program parallel to the Matrix program, where minds that do not accept the matrix are put in to.  Those minds then inevitalbly accept the ZION program and don’t doubt it (obviously until Neo stops those sentinels…).

2)      THE ONE and the programs-

The one is a program that is attached to a mind that a) doesn’t accept the Matrix and b) is capable of learning fast and so on.  Thomas Anderson was this person in the 6th incarnation of the matrix.  What is intriguing is that he also does not accept the ZION program…

The purpose of the ONE program is not to end the matrix, or fulfill any prophecy.  Its purpose is to allow for the destruction of the ZION program and therefore the parallel MATRIX program (they must co-exist) and also to allow for the rebuilding of the ZION program and the restarting or ‘reloading’ of the Matrix program.   But WHY?

It is because people are gunna keep comin’ to ZION.  As the architect says, the anomaly is inevitable; the anomaly is a group of people that does not accept the Matrix program, and thus must be moved into a program that they will accept.  This group of people will always exist, each time the matrix is refreshed or ‘reloaded’.  The Matrix and ZION are reloaded in order to flush out (kill) that group of people, so that there is not too much buildup of people in ZION that could be a threat to the program (if the sentinels are stopped, the program is useless.. it can’t be deleted).  The reason the Matrix is continually flushed is that the anomaly becomes lesser in size every time they run the matrix (the architect says: “This is the 6th time we will have destroyed it, and we are getting exceedingly efficient at it).  But why is this anomaly inevitable?

Simple computer language.  Computers, when running calculations, have a digit limit.  For example, if the number is .1 repeating, it will only be able to calculate .1111111.  Therefore, a calculation will never be fully round… numbers will end up like .99999999 and so on.  This means that there is always that leftover .00000001 that the computer doesn’t know what to do with.  So what does it do?  It puts that data (that group of people) into a program, only to delete the program and restart the calculation.

The ONE historically takes 23 people, unplugs them from the Matrix, and rebuilds Zion with them.  Those 23 people (still really plugged in, of course) then are given the ‘ship captain’ program and are given the image that the ‘savior’ has pulled them from the matrix and started the resistance (this is why Morpheus claims in the first movie that he was among the first to be saved… he was one of those 23 pulled by ONE #5).

The people that previously held the ‘ONE’ program either face deletion or go into exile as a non-vital and ultimately inconsequential program in the Matrix, such as the Merovingian.  This is true because he claims that he has knowledge of Neo’s predecessors and whatnot.

3.  The two doors in the architect’s room, and a little Oracle/Trinity background

First, the Oracle.  I believe she (based on what the architect said) is the creator of Zion, as she was a program sent to investigate the cause of the anomaly in the first Matrix.  She must have discovered that is was not the human’s fault, but that the inevitability of the situation was presented with the program itself.

Next, Trinity.  Simply a program attached to someone capable of falling in love with the person that is capable of carrying the ONE program.  The child that TRINITY and THE ONE have (as illustrated by that seemingly drawn-out sex scene) is the next person that will be capable of carrying the ONE program.  This satisfies the obvious Holy Trinity reference that many saw from the beginning.  Therefore, Morpheus is also a program that has a purpose of attaching the ONE program to that special someone and of ensuring his delivery to the architect.

From what I understand, there are 2 major possibilities here.  I’ll go through both of them.

                           A)  All the ONEs previous to Neo chose the right door (the one that allows for the ONE to go through the MATRIX and ZION instantly and unplug those 23 necessary people).  If this is so, than that must mean that something is different about Neo, as he chose the left door, saving Trinity.  How could this be?  Remember when the Oracle slipped him candy on the park bench?  It was a Trojan… a capsule that changed the data within the ONE program, to allow Neo to act differently to the previous ONEs.  Why would the oracle wanna do this? I dunno… I still can’t tell which side she’s fighting for in this version of the matrix: humans or machines.  Also, this must mean that the Trinity program was not ‘saved’ those previous times, but survives somehow anyway (if that obvious Holy Trinity reference is to be upheld).  This weirdness leads to the second possibility of the ‘door choice’ situation.

                         B) Each previous ONE chose the same door Neo did, saving Trinity and letting Zion fall, but also somehow managed to unplug those 23 people necessary to rebuild Zion… as if he didn’t, then there wouldn’t be multiple Matrices.  In this case, Neo is no different to the other ONEs.

4.  Agent Smith, and WHY this all matters at all.

If you know anything about computer language, you will have realized by now that Agent Smith is a virus that is being run in the MATRIX and ZION programs, and can move in and out of the two easily (y’know, when he morphs into that creepy guy that is on the bed across from Neo at the end of the movie).  But why a virus, and who put him there?

Agent Smith mentions in the first movie that viruses resemble humans in this respect of behavior.  Yet in the second movie, his function as a virus has been revealed… so does that mean that Agent Smith resembles humans?                  Absolutely.

Agent Smith is a program put into the MATRIX and ZION programs by the humans (in the war between human + machine) to sabotage the two programs and free the humans.  This can be done by killing Neo, who is the key to refreshing the Matrix… because if Neo is killed, ZION can not be rebuilt.  ZION would only be destroyed if there was someone around to rebuild it… so if Neo is killed, it can not be rebuilt and therefore the machines (who implemented both the MATRIX and ZION programs) would only hamper their efforts if it were to be destroyed.  So, simply, if Neo dies, people are free, as ZION keeps filling up with people who can destroy the invading machines, therefore disobeying the laws of the program and having it collapse.  Therefore, Smith is a weapon used by the humans in the war against machines in order to destroy ZION and therefore the MATRIX.

5.  Other cool characters, concepts, and references

A)  The twins are exiled programs (programs that had use at one point, but don’t really anymore, just like the Merovingian and Persephone).  They do what they do because they fulfill the orders of the Merovingian.  The Merovingian is annoying because it is his goal to guide Neo; while he is trying to hide his goal by throwing all this crap at him (the twins, all those lackeys, etc), he means to guide Neo by telling him all that stuff about his predecessors (as you can tell by what the Merovingian says that he was a previous ONE).  Anyhow, the twins are just emulating the behavior of the “Ghost” legend… becoming intangible, passing through stuff, etc…  The reason one of them doesn’t pass through the door when his arm is stuck in it and Trinity is shooting at it is because those doors lead to random places unless opened by the keymaker’s key… if he went “Ghost”, the door would have shut and his arm would have ended up in the mountains or wherever.

B) Seraph, I’m guessing, is a program from the first MATRIX (which is why his code is golden).  The first attempt at a MATRIX was heaven… I came to this conclusion because of Seraph’s name (seraph is singular for seraphim or high-choir angels).  Therefore, that code is different because it was from a different program (the first attempt at the MATRIX).

C) "101" comes up a lot in The Matrix and Reloaded.  It is Neo's room # at the beginning, Merovingian is on the 101st floor, and the car chase takes place on Freeway 101.  101 is binary (a universal computer language) for 6… and this is the sixth version of the MATRIX.

D) 314, the number of seconds they have from the power plant explosion to the closing of the Architects’ door, is the first 3 digits of Pi (3.1415927535 etc..).  I dunno why though.  Also, an early Buddhist sect believed that Buddha was actually a God, and according to some weird scroll, existed in/for 314 instances or reasons.  Also, 314 seconds is 5 minutes and 14 seconds, and 5-14 is the date of the screener opening of Reloaded.

               E) Cool religious references include license plates in the car chase: The Twins' truck on the freeway = DE2852; Deuteronomy 28:52 readsThey shall besiege you in all your towns, until your high and fortified walls, in which you trusted, come down throughout all your land. And they shall besiege you in all your towns throughout all your land, which the LORD your God has given you”. Trinity and Morephus' Cadillac on the freeway = DA203; Daniel 2:03 reads “I have had a dream that troubles me and I want to know what it means.”

Agent Smith's Audi close to the start of Reloaded = IS5416; Isaiah 54:16 reads “Behold, I have created the smith that bloweth the coals in the fire, and that bringeth forth an instrument for his work; and I have created the waster to destroy”.
